REMINDER:
Second half Real Estate taxes are due at close of business on Friday, October 31, 2025. Delinquent notices will be mailed out by November 15, 2025. Payments not received in office by November 30, 2025, will publish in the Black Hills Pioneer the week of December 8, 2025.

10-21-23. Delinquency dates for real property taxes--Interest.
On May first of the year after which taxes have been assessed, one-half of all unpaid real property taxes are delinquent. However, all real property taxes totaling fifty dollars or less shall be paid in full on or before April thirtieth. On May first and the first day of each month thereafter there shall be added as interest on the delinquent taxes at the Category G rate of interest as established in § 54-3-16. If the other half is not paid on or before October thirty-first of the same year, that amount also becomes delinquent on November first and the same interest shall attach in the same manner. If the last day of April or October falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the tax is due and payable on the last working day of that month. The tax payment shall either be received in the office on the last working day or the tax payment shall be postmarked by the last day before the taxes become delinquent.

10-22-2. Publication of name of taxpayer and delinquent amount of mobile home taxes or taxes on building on leased site--Collection of taxes, penalty, interest, and charges.
During the week preceding the third Monday in December in each year, the treasurer shall publish in each of the official newspapers of the county, the name of each person whose mobile home taxes or taxes on a building on a leased site are delinquent. The notice shall contain the name of each taxpayer owing delinquent mobile home taxes or delinquent taxes on a building on a leased site and the amount, including interest and penalty, remaining unpaid. The notice does not need to include the name of any delinquent taxpayer known to the treasurer to be deceased. The treasurer shall charge and collect in addition to the taxes, penalty, and interest, the sum of one dollar against each person whose name appears in the publication. The treasurer shall deposit the money collected into the county general fund. The county shall pay the publisher of the notice the sum of thirty-three cents for each name appearing in the notice.

NON-RESIDENT MOTOR VEHICLE INFORMATION
** Butte County does NOT process non-resident title work unless all individuals are present at our office **
Without proof of residency a $100 out-of-state fee will be charged PER vehicle title transfer.
The following documents are REQUIRED to prove residency in Butte County:
1). A copy of your US issued non-expired driver’s license or US issued ID for each owner to be listed on the title.
2). A copy of your Social Security card or proof of your Social Security number for each owner to be listed on the title (such as a copy of a tax document 1099 or W2, must show your full SSN, not just last 4 digits.)
3). Proof of Butte County residency or 2 pieces of mail (such as utility bills or bank statements showing customers name and the Butte County address, handwritten documents will not be accepted as proof of residency).
4). A Post Office Box does NOT prove residency.
**Please note: The above documents will be required each time you come in to process a title transfer.

The state office has had a number of businesses applying for titles under fictitious names. In order to confirm these businesses are valid, it is now required to supply copies of the corporation, LLC, and other papers where they are filed and registered in their home state. This applies to all businesses, whether or not they are doing business in South Dakota. Any business, LLC, or corporation must supply copies of the articles of incorporation, registration, or organization for verification when doing a title transfer.

The Treasurer's Office is responsible for:
- Receiving and accounting for all Butte County funds.
- Managing Butte County's investments.
- Collecting all taxes for Butte County, including real estate and mobile home taxes, and special assessments.
- Issuing titles and licenses for new and used motor vehicles, motorcycles, trailers, snowmobiles and boats.
- Releasing and notating motor vehicle liens.
- Assisting customers in applying for duplicate motor vehicle titles.
- Issuing distress warrants on behalf of the Department of Revenue and Department of Labor as required by law.

Property Tax Due Date Information
- Real estate tax notices are mailed to the property owners late January.
- The first half of your real estate taxes are due by close of business on April 30th or the last business day of April. The second half of your real estate taxes are due by close of business on October 31st or the last business day of October. Postmark is accepted.
- If you are paying after the due date, please contact the Butte County Treasurer’s Office at 605-892-4456 for the total amount due, with penalty and interest.
- Delinquent notices are mailed in November. Taxes not paid by November 28, 2025 will be published in the Black Hills Pioneer, the second week in December.
